dc.description.abstract In Switzerland, geomatics apprentices in their third and fourth years are required to take classes in GIS. After several smaller projects, which among others focus on analyzing data using various queries, generating choropleth maps, making pie charts, interpolating surfaces, and creating contour lines with QGIS, the students are encouraged to select a topic which interests them and use their knowledge gained during the preceding projects to analyze and present it. Using open data from e.g. federal offices, students are asked to fulfill specified requirements.
